What is Shell Cordovan?
Rocado Shell Cordovan leather is crafted in Toscana, Italy, by Rocado, a renowned tannery that has been in operation since 1982. As one of the few remaining producers of this exceptional leather, Rocado is known for its meticulous craftsmanship, rich colors, and premium-quality hides. Their shell cordovan features a refined, polished luster with a subtle waxy feel. Its dense, tight fiber structure makes it exceptionally durable, making it an ideal choice for leather goods designed to withstand everyday use.
Shell cordovan is a rare and highly regarded leather derived from a specific layer of horsehide known as the "cordovan" layer. This unique layer is found only in equine hides, primarily in the rump area, and each hide yields just two small oval-shaped pieces, known as shells. Using a time-honored vegetable tanning process that spans six months, the leather undergoes careful hand-finishing to achieve its signature quality. The result is one of the finest leathers in the world, prized for its durability, rich patina, and timeless appeal.
